After their season ended in a 0-7 loss to E.C. Glass, the William Fleming soccer team gathered in the locker room one more time to watch the FC Barcelona vs Manchester United European Cup soccer match. Here, the soccer players erupt as a potential goal by FC Barcelona is blocked. The William Byrd High School soccer team is made up of mostly African and South American players, many of whom are not native speakers of English. To a large extent, soccer is what keeps them together. It helps them learn English and it gives them a familiar outlet in an unfamiliar land.

Brian Robinson, "TK-2918" Stormtrooper in the Garrison Tyranus (Virginia) chapter of the 501st Legion, patrols the hallways of the Holiday Inn in Roanoke, Virginia during the 17th annual SheVaCon science fiction and fantasy convention. The 501st Legion, "Vaders First", is "The world's definitive imperial costuming organization". Virginia's Garrison Tyranus has 77 members, including Stormtroopers, Sith Lords, Denizens of the Empire, Imperial Officers, Bounty Hunters, Biker Scouts, Snowtroopers, Sandtroopers, and Tie Pilots.
  
Portland Police Officer, Sarah Taylor, takes a break after discovering the body of a 66 year old woman, who lay deceased in an apartment six days before being discovered. The women had no relatives, and the death was only discovered after neighbors complained about the smell. Officer Taylor said that even though policing is difficult emotionally at times, she loves her job and that she lives to go home and cook a dinner for her family, forgetting about even the worst things she encounters on her beat.
  
Dennis Adkins, Dayshift Electrician and Safety Committee Member for the Bluestone Coal Corporation Keystone Service Industries Coal Processing Plant in Keystone, West Virginia, watches as a customer loads a pickup truck with coal as Utility Man, Henry Martin Jr. (back left of picture), eats his lunch. Dennis performed safety checks this morning, but the processing plant remained open despite a call for a voluntary shut down of mines by the Governor of West Viginia.
     
  
  
Eight year old Malasia Witcher holds a candle during a prayer at a  candlelight vigil that was held for Shirley Hodges, 64, of Rocky Mount, on the three-week anniversary of her disappearance. Hodges’ husband died, apparently by suicide, in a Texas motel the day Hodges’ daughter reported her missing. Investigators have said they suspect foul play.

Demarcus Riley takes a moment to calm himself before he is to address over 600 people inside of a tent housing a fundraising and graduation ceremony for the Friends of the Children Center located at 44 NE Morris in Portland.  Demarcus Riley is part of group of kids from poor families who were adopted by portland businessman Duncan Campbell 10 years ago and who are now graduating from high school and from his special program and ready to go onto college.
     
  
Sandro Lopez, a.ka. Carlitos the clown, who also plays Marvel's Spider-Man, makes his entrance to the the Gold Big Top of the Cole Bros. Circus of the Stars. The one-ring-circus, based in Leland, Florida, has been coming to the SW Virginia area for over 50 years, and employs 150 people. This year, Cole Bros. Circus will play 110 cities, 20 states and perform 250 shows.
  
Destinee Mason (age 4), looks out a bus window at a re-creation of Mt. Olivet at Holy Land USA in Bedford, Virginia. Christians consider Mt. Olivet a hallowed place because it is the place where Jesus ascended to heaven, and the place where he is to return. Holy Land USA is a walking or motorized tour following key events in the life of Christ. Destinee was taking the tour with a church group who traveled 3 1/2 hours from Emporia, Virginia.
  
Rasheed Whorley (age 13), takes a leap off a second story stairway onto a trampoline as friends, Jamar Preston (left, age 13), Malik Whorley (middle left, shirtless, age 8), and Demontrae Calloway (right, age 16), look on. The group assembled the trampoline at their house on SW13th Avenue two weeks ago, and have been playing on it everyday.
     
  
Michael Turner, lays on a couch in his grandmother's trailer, eating Cheetos and watching T.V.  Michael's grandmother is Dana Turner, who foreclosed on her house in North Portland year after she was unable to pay thousands of dollars in citations by a city inspector. City inspector David Hallberg purchased her home and made a $100,000 profit on it within seven months; he and two other investigators are under investigation. Dana moved into the trailer with her family after losing her home to foreclosure.
  
  
In a dimly lit downstairs staging area, a lone rider practices his riding skills just before competing in the National Bicycle League BMX Christmas Classic and Presidents Cup held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. More than 2,000 BMXer’s from across the country are expected to attend the event, which runs December 27-29 2008.
     
  
In a show of support for their daughters, William Byrd High School cheerleaders' dads paint school colors on their bodies before the teams’ final round performance at the VHSL State AA Cheerleading Championship Saturday at the Stuart C. Siegel Center on the campus of the Virginia Commonwealth University. The Terriers dominated the final round of competition, scoring 296 points out of a possible 300 to take their second straight state

Twenty year old homeless youth, Sarah Duffus shares a laugh with friends while attending The Salvation Army Greenhouse Prom on the 4th floor of the NW Natural building in downtown Portland. The prom is for homeless youth and celebrates the graduation ceremonies for the New Avenues and Greenhouse Althernative Schools programs. Sarah's dress was donated to her by Tiffany Designs, a online dress company and is valued at around four hundred dollars.
  
  
 couple of Virginia Tech fans celebrate in the endzone at the conclusion of the game against Nebraska. VT scored a touchdown with 21 seconds left to win the game 16-15 against Nebraska at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia on Saturday.
     
  
  
Shelton McComb goes over his lyrics just before he is to record a rap song at Trillion Cuts Studio. Shelton is part of the Leo Ni Leo drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Leo Ni Leo offers young African-American youth a chance to be around positive mentors in the black community. Trillion Cuts Studio donates recording time, but the raps the youth write must be positive, clean, and with no curses.
