The William Byrd High School team warms up at the Rivers Edge soccer fields before a game. The Rivers Edge is the team's home field, because there is no soccer field at William Fleming. The William Byrd High School soccer team is made up of mostly African and South American players, many of whom are not native speakers of English. To a large extent, soccer is what keeps them together. It helps them learn English and it gives them a familiar outlet in an unfamiliar land.
